It's like a candy store for Bike Enthusiasts

There are so many good posters! Ladies and gentlemen, the 1st Annual Austin Bike Poster Show is underway. The show opening was held Thursday, May 6, where the winning poster was announced (photos from the opening). And the winning poster is "Commute" by Kevin Nadeau. It combines all of the elements - art that promotes bicycles for transportation in Austin. There are 24 posters in the show. Many of the artists were at Thursday's opening to autograph their works. The judges acknowledged the decision was difficult because of the high quality of the submissions. It's a great mix.

Come to the Frame Corner Gallery at 5601 Adams Ave, to see them all. The posters are on sale for $25 each, a portion of each sale goes to the Lamar Middle School Safe Routes to School program. Here is a link to jpegs of all of the posters! Support art and bicycling, buy a poster.

The 25 Posters Have Been Selected - Let's Party!

Please join us for the Show opening of the 1st Annual Austin Bike Poster Show this Thursday, May 6, at the The Frame Corner Gallery, 7:00-9:00 at 5601 Adams Ave where we will have 25 Bike Posters on display created by local artists. The posters were selected from a group of 46 submitted for the Show. They were chosen by the Austin Yellow Bike collective and the Lamar Safe Routes to School committee. The purpose of the show is to promote cycling in Austin. The posters were chosen based on their ability to inspire cycling for transportation in Austin.

We will be announcing the overall winner at the Show selected by a panel of three judges: Council Member Chris Riley, Austin Bike and Pedestrian Program Manager, Annick Beaudet, and Elliott McFadden, Editor of Austin on Two Wheels.

Copies of the posters will be available for purchase for $25 each and the artists will be there to autograph. Ten percent of the proceeds will go to the Lamar Middle School Safe Routes to School project. Beer and food. Join us.

Where are the bikes?

Ten percent of the monies collected from the sale of the bike posters in the 1st Annual Austin Bike Poster Show will go to the Lamar Middle School Safe Routes to School Program. You can see by the color photo of the school's bike rack taken recently, the need is there. Here's a status report on the committee's progress and info about the program.
Last week students at Lamar Middle School were given a short survey to bring home to complete. It is the first step in a relatively new initiative at Lamar Middle School called Safe Routes to School. Safe Routes to School (SRTS) is a nationwide program to get children to school safely and efficiently by walking or riding their bike. It is a program designed to get kids moving again with the added benefit of reducing congestion and pollution around schools. It also lets children become better acquainted with the world around them as they travel to and from school. You see more of your surroundings when you travel by foot or bike. According to the national SRTS program, the number of kids biking to school has fallen from nearly two-thirds in the 1960s to barely 10% today. Over the same period, there has been a dramatic increase in the number of overweight children. Our SRTS committee at Lamar in conjunction with the City of Austin and the national SRTS program is determined to turn this around. The black and white photo above was taken from the 1981 Lamar MS yearbook. The color photo was taken on March 31, 2010 at the Lamar bike racks.

There is a lot to be done. Step one is simply to find out how children at Lamar are currently traveling to school and what the impediments are to getting there on foot or by bike. Next steps and how we proceed will be shaped by what we learn from the survey. If you would like to get involved or stay current on the committee's activities, contact Jane Herrin, Lamar Safe Routes to School Coordinator, jhherrin@aol.com.

Deadline for poster submissions is April 30

Submit Today. Poster submissions are trickling in and they are good. Some are really good! Plans are to have 25 posters for the show but hoping to have three times that number to select from. You can submit more than one. Remember, the poster show opening will be Thursday, May 6, 7:00 - 9:00 pm at the Frame Corner Gallery. I am told that it will be the destination for that Thursday's Social Cycling ATX ride. I am hoping all of the poster artists will attend as well to sign their posters. Also in attendance will be Council Member Chris Riley and the City of Austin's Bike and Pedestrian Program Manager, Annick Beaudett.

Focus on the Art. We will take care of the copies.

If you are thinking about submitting a poster but worried about the cost of making 31 copies available for the show (1 for display, 30 to sell), we have worked out a deal with Ginny's Printing. Submit your poster and we will take care of getting them printed. Ginny's Printing is giving us a bulk price. If we provide them pdf versions of the posters (22x14), they will print 31 digital color copies for $1.12 per poster. The Frame Corner Gallery will be responsible for sending the pdfs to Ginny's. Your poster will be included in the transmission provided your poster is selected for the show and you prepay the $35 for the copies. This is a much better price than if you were to order the copies on your own.

What's in it for me?

Fame and money. The Austin Bike Poster Show is about making art that inspires cycling for transportation. Artists selected for the show will have 30 copies to sell for $25 each. Ten percent of that will go towards the Lamar Safe Routes to School program. Twenty percent will go to the gallery for hosting and promoting the show. The artists get 70% of the sales minus the cost of the poster ($1.12 per poster, if you have the copies made through The Frame Corner deal with Ginny's, see post below). Be creative and get rewarded!

Yellow Bike Project to Select 25 Posters for Show

Volunteers of the Austin Yellow Bike Project will be selecting the 25 posters for the Austin Bike Poster Show that will be held May 6 - June 5th at The Frame Corner Gallery. The submissions will be posted on a web page and the url given to the panel to review and vote on. The Austin Yellow Bike Project is an ideal group for the selecting art that inspires cycling for transportation in the city. In addition to selecting the 25 show posters, the Austin Yellow Bike Project will be home to the posters following the show that ends April 5th.

The Austin Yellow Bike Project is a 501c(3) all-volunteer initiative to put bicycles on the streets of Austin and Central Texas by operating community bike shops, teaching bike mechanics and maintenance, and acting as a local bike advocacy group.
